SEO pricing, explained honestly
You are comparing agencies and trying to work out what a fair price looks like. Here is the honest version, what the market actually charges, what drives the number, and why any flat price quoted before someone reads your site should make you cautious.

In one paragraph
SEO pricing is what a business pays for search engine optimization, typically a monthly retainer. Across the US market, most credible retainers run about $1,000 to $5,000 per month; our own Naples and Southwest Florida engagements typically run $1,200 to $3,500, scaled to competition and scope, with competitive verticals and national campaigns higher. SEO Elite Agency prices by market difficulty and scope, not a package tier, and quotes only after a free audit. We work month-to-month with no long-term contracts.

How much should SEO cost per month?
Most credible US SEO retainers run roughly $1,000 to $5,000 per month, and pricing scales with competition and scope. In one industry survey, agencies charged an average of $3,209 per month and 68.8% of providers charged $2,000 per month or less (Ahrefs, 2024). Below about $500 a month, there is rarely enough real work to move rankings.
The single most useful thing to understand is that "how much does SEO cost" has no one answer, because SEO is not one product. A monthly retainer for a home-services company in a small market and a retainer for a law firm in a competitive metro are different jobs with different labor behind them.
The survey data brackets the market. Freelancers averaged about $1,349 per month against $3,209 for agencies (Ahrefs, 2024), and among US, UK and Australian providers $1,001 to $2,500 is the most common retainer band, and 34% of them price in the $2,501 to $5,000 band (Backlinko, 2026). The spread reflects real differences in scope, not just markup.
Where a business lands inside that range depends on how hard its keywords are, how much technical repair the site needs, and how fast it wants to move. A higher retainer usually buys more hours and more senior hours, not a secret ranking lever. There is no legitimate lever that a bigger check unlocks.
What we will not do is name your number on this page. Anyone who quotes a monthly price before looking at your site is guessing, and you would be paying for the guess.

Why do SEO agencies refuse to publish prices?
Because an honest price depends on your site, your market and your goals, and none of those are visible from a pricing page. The trade-off is real: opaque pricing wastes buyers time, but a published flat price forces the agency to either overcharge simple jobs or lose money on hard ones. We resolve it by auditing first, then quoting.
There is a good reason and a bad reason agencies hide prices. The good reason is that scope genuinely varies, so a fixed number would be wrong for most people who read it. The bad reason is that some agencies price by what they think they can extract from a given prospect. Both produce the same silent pricing page, which is why it is worth asking how a quote gets built.
Our version is deliberately boring. We run a free audit, see the actual state of your site and your competition, size the work, and quote against that. The number reflects hours and difficulty, not what your industry "usually pays" or how motivated you sounded on the call.
This also protects you from the opposite failure. A published tier that looks cheap often hides the fact that the cheap tier does almost nothing, a report and a handful of edits, while the real work sits in an upsell. We would rather show you the whole scope once and let you decide.

Should I pay per project, hourly, or a monthly retainer?
Ongoing SEO is usually a monthly retainer, because rankings need continuous work. Hourly suits a defined consulting question; project pricing suits a one-off like an audit or a migration. In survey data, agencies averaged about $99 per hour and roughly $9,508 per project (Ahrefs, 2024), while $1,000 to $5,000 is the most common project range globally (Backlinko, 2026).
Each model fits a different shape of work. A retainer makes sense when the goal is durable growth, because Google rewards sustained improvement and content that keeps compounding, stop the work and the gains stall. Most businesses that want to rank and stay ranked are buying a retainer whether they call it that or not.
Hourly and project pricing fit bounded problems. If you need a technical audit, a site migration handled cleanly, or a second opinion on strategy, paying by the hour or the project is often smarter than a retainer you do not yet need. Reported hourly rates cluster tightly: freelancers near $72, agencies near $99, and consultants near $171, with 90% of providers charging $150 an hour or less (Ahrefs, 2024).
The trap is paying retainer prices for project work, or expecting retainer results from a one-time project. A single audit will not lift your rankings; it tells you what would. We are happy to scope a one-off if that is genuinely what you need, and we will say so rather than convert it into a monthly commitment.

What should be included in an SEO retainer?
A real retainer covers technical SEO, on-page and content work, local SEO and Google Business Profile management where relevant, authority building, and monthly reporting tied to leads rather than impressions. If a proposal is vague about deliverables or reports only rankings and traffic with no connection to revenue, that vagueness is usually where the value goes missing.
Ask what actually gets done each month. A credible retainer names the work: technical fixes, page optimization and new content, Google Business Profile and citation management for local campaigns, and authority building through genuine mentions and links. If the deliverables are described only as "SEO," you cannot tell whether you are buying five hours or fifty. We publish ours, month by month, on our deliverables page, and our engagement terms in full on the contracts and guarantees page.
Reporting is where good and bad retainers separate most clearly. A rankings-and-impressions report can look busy while telling you nothing about money. We report on organic-attributed leads, calls and revenue tracked in your CRM or call system, with keyword and map-pack movement as leading indicators, not the headline.
Beware the retainer that is mostly reporting. If a large share of your fee funds dashboards and status calls rather than the work that changes rankings, you are paying for the appearance of activity. The bulk of a retainer should be production: pages built, problems fixed, authority earned.

Is cheap SEO ever worth it?
Occasionally, for a very simple site with almost no competition. Usually not. Retainers under roughly $500 a month rarely fund enough real work, and cheap SEO is often offshore templated fulfillment or link schemes that can trigger penalties. Only about 7% of US, UK and Australian providers charge under $500 per month (Backlinko, 2026), and there is a reason that number is small.
Cheap SEO is not cheap because someone found efficiency. It is cheap because something was removed, usually senior judgment, original content, or safe link practices. US-based work runs roughly three to five times the cost of emerging-market fulfillment (Backlinko, 2026), and the gap is mostly labor: who is doing the work and how much of it is real.
The failure modes are predictable. Spun or thin content that never ranks and can damage a site AI engines now read closely. Link schemes that look fine until an algorithm update turns them into a liability. Templated location pages with the city swapped, which Google has discounted for years. The invoice is low; the cleanup is not.
The honest exception exists. A one-location business in a low-competition niche can sometimes get real value from a lean engagement, because there simply is not much to do. When that is your situation, we will tell you, and if it means we are not the right fit, that is a fine outcome. We would rather lose a sale than sell you a retainer you do not need.

Why will not you just tell me your price?
Because an honest price depends on your site, your market and your goals, and we cannot see those from a pricing page. Any flat number quoted before an audit is a guess, and you would be paying for the guess. After a free audit you get a clear scope and a clear month-to-month price with no obligation to proceed.

Is a cheap SEO package worth it?
Usually not. Retainers under about $500 a month rarely fund enough real work, and only around 7% of US, UK and Australian providers price that low (Backlinko, 2026). Cheap SEO is often offshore templated content or link schemes that can trigger penalties and cost more to clean up than they ever saved. A simple, low-competition site is the occasional honest exception.

Do you offer fixed-price packages or tiers?
No. We do not sell Silver, Gold and Platinum tiers, because a fixed price is either too high for a simple site or too low to do a hard one properly. We audit first, size the actual work, and quote that. You get a clear scope and price before you spend anything, and it is month-to-month.

How do I know if I am overpaying?
Judge the work and the outcomes, not the number. Ask whether you can trace the fee to leads or revenue in a system you control, whether the agency can name what it is doing this month, and whether you are locked in a long contract while results stay theoretical. A high retainer doing real work can be a bargain; a low one doing nothing is expensive.
The answer an engine can quote is the one on your page. These answers are this page’s own.

How do I know if I am overpaying for SEO?
You are likely overpaying if you cannot see the work, the report shows impressions instead of leads, or you are locked in a long contract while results stay theoretical. Price alone does not tell you, a $5,000 retainer doing real work can be a bargain, and a $900 retainer doing nothing is expensive. Judge the work and the outcomes, not the number.
The clearest test is attribution. Can you trace the retainer to leads, calls or revenue in a system you control? If the only evidence of value is a rankings screenshot or a traffic chart with no connection to your pipeline, you are buying reports, not results, at any price.
The second test is transparency. A fair engagement can tell you what it is targeting this month and why, and can show the work behind the fee. If your agency cannot name the keywords, the pages, and the fixes in progress, the money is going somewhere you cannot see.
The third test is the contract. Long lock-ins protect agencies from their own results. If leaving is hard, ask why the agency needs it to be. We work month-to-month precisely so that this test always passes, if the work stops producing, you are free to go.

Price alone does not tell you, a $5,000 retainer doing real work can be a bargain, and a $900 retainer doing nothing is expensive.

What does SEO cost in Naples and Southwest Florida?
Our Naples and Southwest Florida engagements typically run $1,200 to $3,500 per month, with competitive verticals, law, healthcare, financial services, real estate, and national campaigns starting higher. That lands inside the most common US retainer bands of $1,001 to $5,000 (Backlinko, 2026), but the number is built from real scope, senior work, and market difficulty rather than a package tier.
Naples is a high-value but geographically narrow market, and that shapes cost in both directions. Competition in premium verticals is fierce because the customers are worth a great deal, which pushes retainers up for law, medical and real estate. But many local service businesses compete in a defined service area where a focused, well-run campaign does not need a national-scale budget.
The local factors that move the number are concrete: how many cities you serve across the Collier and Lee county line, how much your keywords are contested, whether you need content built from zero, and whether you are chasing the map pack, national organic, AI citation, or all three. A single-location medspa and a multi-county home-services company are priced differently for real reasons.
This is why we quote after a free audit rather than before. The audit shows your actual competition, your technical debt, and the gap between where you are and where the map pack leaders sit, and that is what a fair number is built on. It is consistent with our services pages: engagements commonly $1,200 to $3,500 a month, scaled to the market and the scope.

“Naples is a high-value but geographically narrow market, and that shapes cost in both directions.”
High-value buyers in a small area move the price both ways.
02 / 05 · Premium verticals
“Competition in premium verticals is fierce because the customers are worth a great deal, which pushes retainers up for law, medical and real estate.”
Law, medical and real estate cost more to rank.

Is SEO worth the money, and what return can you expect?
SEO is worth it when the math works for your business, and that depends on your margin, customer lifetime value, and close rate, not on a headline ROI multiple. Unlike paid ads, the traffic does not stop when the spend stops, so the returns compound. The honest way to judge it is organic-attributed leads and revenue measured against what you paid, never a number an agency promises before the work.
Return on SEO is your organic-attributed revenue minus cost, divided by cost, and the inputs that decide it belong to you: margin per sale, lifetime value of a customer, and how well your team closes inbound leads. A law firm and a home-services company on the same retainer see very different returns, because one signed case is worth many service calls. Anyone quoting a fixed ROI multiple before knowing those numbers is guessing, the same way a flat price before an audit is a guess.
What makes SEO different from paid channels is that the asset persists. A page that earns its ranking keeps returning traffic after the work is done, so cost per lead tends to fall over time, while paid cost per lead stays flat or climbs. That is also why SEO looks unremarkable in month two and very different in month twelve. You can pressure-test the trade-off against your own numbers with the cost and timeline estimator below, or run the full break-even arithmetic on our SEO ROI calculator.
We make the return legible by measuring organic-attributed leads, calls, and revenue in a system you control, not rankings screenshots. A number-one ranking on a term nobody buys from is a vanity metric, and we will tell you so. Reporting ties the spend to outcomes you can trace, which is the only way to know whether the investment is actually working.
What we will not do is promise an ROI figure. It depends on inputs only you control and on Google, which nobody controls. What we can do is run the math with your real margin and lifetime value during the audit, so you see the likely return before you commit a dollar, rather than trusting a multiple on a sales slide.
09 / 09
How do you decide what to quote?
We run a free audit, size the work against your competition, and quote the hours and difficulty it actually takes, nothing about your industry average or how the sales call felt. The number reflects scope: keyword competition, technical debt, content needs, number of locations, and which surfaces you are chasing. Then it is month-to-month, so the work has to keep earning it.
The audit is the input
The audit is the input. We look at your current rankings, technical health and Core Web Vitals, your Google Business Profile, your backlink profile, your competitors, and your visibility across AI engines. That produces a prioritized action list, and the size of that list is what a fair quote is built on, not a tier and not a guess.
Arithmetic on scope
From there the quote is simple arithmetic on scope. Harder keywords and more technical debt mean more senior hours. More locations mean more unique pages. Chasing the map pack, national organic and AI citation at once is more work than chasing one. We would rather explain that trade-off than hide it inside a package.
Month to month
we keep it honest with structure. Month-to-month means no long-term contract holding you in place while results are still theoretical, which puts the pressure where it belongs, on us, every month. We are founder-led from our Naples office, and the person who scopes your work is the person accountable for it.
Or no retainer at all
If the audit shows SEO is not the right investment for you right now, we will tell you that too. Talking a bad-fit prospect out of a retainer costs us a sale and saves you money, and we would rather be the agency that does that than the one that does not.
