## What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
GEO is the practice of making a business readable, verifiable and quotable by AI answer engines, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot, so they cite it when a buyer asks for a recommendation. It shares SEO's foundation of clean delivery and real authority, but it optimizes for being named inside a generated answer rather than ranked in a list of links.
The behavior it serves is already here. Roughly 45% of consumers now use AI to find a local business [(BrightLocal, 2026)](https://www.brightlocal.com/research/local-consumer-review-survey/), making AI the third-largest local discovery channel behind Google and the map pack. When someone asks an engine "who's the best SEO company in Naples," they get a short list of names with reasoning attached, not ten blue links to sift through.
The supply side has not caught up. Only about 1.2% of businesses are actually recommended by ChatGPT, against 35.9% that appear in Google's local pack [(SOCi, 2026)](https://www.soci.ai/insights/lvi/). Demand moved faster than supply, which is why the citation is still available to whoever does the work first.
GEO is not a rebrand of SEO and not a separate budget you bolt on. It is a higher standard applied to the same fundamentals: tell the engine who you are, answer the question in a form it can lift, and give it independent reasons to trust you. The rest of this page is how that works.

## What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO earns a ranking in a list of links. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) earns the featured snippet, the voice answer and the "People Also Ask" box. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) earns a citation inside an AI-generated answer from ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews. They share a foundation, crawlable delivery, entity clarity, real authority, but reward different page structures.
The buyer never sees the same surface twice, which is why the distinction matters. Someone typing a query into Google gets a ranked page. Someone asking a voice assistant gets one spoken sentence. Someone asking ChatGPT to compare their options gets a synthesized paragraph that names a few businesses and explains why. Winning one surface does not automatically win the others.
AEO wants a direct answer in a single extractable paragraph, question-shaped headings, and passages structured for a snippet. GEO wants those things plus something harder to fake: an unambiguous entity the model can resolve to your specific business, and corroboration from sources it already trusts. The peer-reviewed study that named the field found these content changes, adding relevant statistics, quotations from named sources and citations, can boost a page’s visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%, with the effect varying by domain (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024).
The good news is that these layers stack rather than compete. Entity consistency helps the map pack, answer-first content improves both snippet capture and AI extraction, and the same authority signals feed rankings and citations. You are not choosing between SEO, AEO and GEO, you are meeting one standard that satisfies all three.

## How do ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews choose which sources to cite?
AI engines retrieve a set of candidate pages from a search index, then select a few to cite based on how well the page answers the exact question, how clearly it identifies the business, how authoritative and corroborated the source is, and how fresh it is. Most retrieved pages are never cited. The selection rewards evidence, not clever markup.
The retrieval layer is more concrete than most assume. ChatGPT Search draws its live results from Bing's index, and one analysis found 87% of SearchGPT citations matched Bing's top organic results for the same query [(Seer Interactive, 2025)](https://www.seerinteractive.com/insights/87-percent-of-searchgpt-citations-match-bings-top-results). An unclaimed or inconsistent Bing presence can make you invisible inside ChatGPT no matter how well you rank on Google.
These systems are entity-based, not keyword-based. Before an engine names your business it has to resolve which business you are, one location, one phone number, one set of services, from consistent signals across your site, your profiles and the wider web. One directory listing with an old phone number is enough to make a model hedge and name a competitor it feels more certain about. Each engine also has its own retrieval quirks and its own crawlers, which is why we maintain dedicated playbooks for [ChatGPT](https://seoeliteagency.com/chatgpt-optimization-services/), [Perplexity](https://seoeliteagency.com/perplexity-optimization-services/), [Google AI Overviews](https://seoeliteagency.com/google-ai-overviews-optimization/), and [Gemini and Copilot](https://seoeliteagency.com/gemini-optimization-services/), all resting on the [crawlability layer](https://seoeliteagency.com/ai-crawlability-services/) that lets any of them read you at all.
Then it weighs trust, and trust largely lives off your own site. In a study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated with AI visibility at roughly 0.66 to 0.71, while link metrics such as backlink counts showed only very weak correlation [(Ahrefs, 2025)](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-brand-visibility-correlations/). Independent pages saying compatible things about you is what moves an engine from aware of you to confident enough to cite you.

## Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend my business?
No, and any agency that guarantees it is selling you something that does not exist. There is no meta tag, no prompt you can publish, no schema property and no hack that forces an AI engine to cite you. The engines select sources on evidence and rerank constantly. What we can do is build that evidence and measure whether it is working. What we cannot do is promise the outcome.
This is where the snake oil concentrates. You will see "get cited by ChatGPT guaranteed," "AI ranking secrets," and tools that claim a hidden setting makes the models pick you. The models do not work that way. They synthesize an answer from retrieved sources at query time, and the same question can return different names on different days.
What actually moves the needle is unglamorous and slow: unambiguous entity data, answers a model can extract cleanly, genuine third-party mentions, and a site an AI crawler can read without executing anything. None of it is a switch, all of it is compounding work, the same way real SEO always was.
So we will tell you plainly what we control and what we do not. We control the inputs, structure, clarity, corroboration, delivery. We do not control the engine's ranking function, and we will never invoice you against a citation-rate number we invented. If an agency shows you a guaranteed AI win rate, ask to see the raw data.

## Does GEO traffic actually convert, or is it just visibility?
The visitors AI engines send convert better than ordinary organic traffic in multiple 2025–2026 analyses, because someone who read a synthesized recommendation and clicked through is further along their decision than someone starting a search. One benchmark of 312 B2B technology firms measured AI-referred conversion at 14.2% against 2.8% for Google organic, roughly a 5x advantage [(Opollo, 2026, via Pixis)](https://pixis.ai/blog/why-ai-search-traffic-converts-at-4-5x-what-the-data-actually-shows/). That sample is B2B software, not local services, so treat the direction as informative and the multiple as unproven for your market.
The intuition is simple. A person who types a query and clicks a result is at the start of a research process spanning tabs, reviews and second opinions. A person who arrives from an AI answer has already had the field narrowed and the reasoning explained, so they land closer to a decision and a larger share of them act.
The multiple is not uniform, and honesty demands the range. Independent analyses put the AI-to-organic conversion advantage anywhere from about 1.3x in low-consideration ecommerce to more than 20x in B2B software [(Pixis analysis, 2026)](https://pixis.ai/blog/why-ai-search-traffic-converts-at-4-5x-what-the-data-actually-shows/). Those samples are not local service businesses, so the honest statement is that the direction is consistent and the size is unknown for a Naples firm.
The caveat is volume. AI referral traffic is still small in absolute terms for most local businesses, so GEO is not a reason to abandon rankings and the map pack, which still drive the bulk of leads today. It is how you capture a fast-growing, high-intent channel early, before it is crowded.

## Do I still need GEO if I already rank #1 on Google?
Ranking #1 helps but does not guarantee a citation. AI engines lean on strong organic results, most AI Overviews draw from pages already in the top of search, yet only about 1.2% of businesses get recommended by ChatGPT while 35.9% appear in Google's local pack [(SOCi, 2026)](https://www.soci.ai/insights/lvi/). If a buyer asks AI and a competitor is named instead of you, the ranking never gets seen.
A high Google ranking and an AI citation are correlated but not the same thing. Ranking earns you a place in the candidate set the engine retrieves from; it does not decide whether you are the source it quotes. The engine still has to resolve your entity cleanly, find an extractable answer, and see enough corroboration to feel confident naming you.
There is also a surface you do not control. When an AI Overview resolves the query above the traditional results, the buyer may never scroll to your #1 listing. Being the top link on a page nobody reads to the bottom is worth less than being the business the summary names.
So the honest answer is that ranking well is the strongest starting point for GEO, and you should protect it, but it is a floor, not a finish line. The businesses that keep their #1 and get cited by AI treated their entity data, their answers and their third-party reputation as deliberately as they treated their rankings.

## Why does a fast, server-rendered website matter for getting cited by AI?
Because AI crawlers read your raw HTML and do not run your JavaScript. The major AI crawlers, GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, do not execute JavaScript; they take the HTML the server sends and stop there [(Vercel, 2024)](https://vercel.com/blog/the-rise-of-the-ai-crawler). If your content only appears after a script runs, the engines quoting businesses to your buyers simply cannot see it.
This is the most overlooked technical fact in GEO. Vercel found that even when these bots download your JavaScript files, GPTBot did in about 11.5% of requests, ClaudeBot in roughly 24%, they never execute them [(Vercel, 2024)](https://vercel.com/blog/the-rise-of-the-ai-crawler). A single-page site that renders its content client-side can look rich to a human and nearly blank to an AI engine.
The fix is server-side or static rendering: the meaningful content, who you are, what you do, where you serve, your answers to buyer questions, must exist in the HTML that arrives before any script runs. That is a foundation requirement, not an enhancement, which is why we treat crawlable delivery as the first thing to get right.
It is also why we hold our own site to the standard we sell. Every page here ships static, server-rendered HTML with the primary content in the source, so an AI crawler reads the full answer on the first fetch.

## Does schema markup or an llms.txt file get you cited by AI?
Both help less than the hype claims. [Schema.org markup](https://seoeliteagency.com/schema-markup-services/) makes your entity and content machine-readable, which is worth doing, but a large controlled study found adding schema produced no clear lift in AI citations by itself [(Ahrefs, 2026)](https://ahrefs.com/blog/schema-ai-citations/). And llms.txt is barely used: of the roughly 38,000 domains Ahrefs found publishing a valid one, 97% saw no requests for it at all in the month studied [(Ahrefs, 2026)](https://ahrefs.com/blog/llmstxt-study/). Neither is a shortcut.
Schema is genuinely useful for what it is: it removes ambiguity about your business, services and content so search and AI systems can parse them without guessing. What it is not is a citation lever you can pull. Ahrefs tracked pages that added JSON-LD against a control group and found no meaningful citation uplift across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode or ChatGPT [(Ahrefs, 2026)](https://ahrefs.com/blog/schema-ai-citations/). We implement schema because clarity compounds, not because it is a magic word.
llms.txt is a proposed file that lists your content for language models. Adoption has grown, but the engines mostly ignore it: Ahrefs crawled 137,210 domains and found that 28% publish an llms.txt file; of the roughly 38,000 that had a valid one, 97% saw no requests for it at all in the month studied [(Ahrefs, 2026)](https://ahrefs.com/blog/llmstxt-study/). Worth being exact about the denominator, because the headline invites the wrong read: that share is of the files that exist, not of every domain crawled. No major AI company has committed to acting on it in production. We ship one anyway because it is cheap and forward-looking, and we are honest that it earns little today.
What we do build is the fuller version of that idea, and we run it on this very site so you can inspect it. Instead of a bare llms.txt, we publish a value-ranked AI-agent handoff: a /llms.txt that leads with instructions and a question-to-page map, a machine-readable /ai-content-index.json, an /AGENTS.md guide, and a clean Markdown twin of every page. The point is not to manufacture demand that is not there. It is that when an AI crawler does arrive, it gets an unambiguous map of your highest-value content and exactly how to cite it, rather than raw HTML to guess through. Nothing about the handoff is left to chance.
The pattern here is the whole discipline in miniature. Techniques sold as GEO "hacks" are usually minor hygiene dressed up as secret weapons. We do the hygiene, we tell you what it is worth, and we spend the real effort on what the evidence says moves citations: entity clarity, extractable answers and independent corroboration.

## How do you measure AI citation, and what makes SEO Elite Agency's approach different?
You measure GEO by tracking, across a fixed set of buyer prompts, whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews name your business, what they say, and which sources they cite, then watching AI referral traffic and the leads it produces. What makes us different is that we hold our own site to the standard we sell, so you can inspect the method before you buy it.
Measurement has to be honest to be useful. There is no official "AI rankings" dashboard, so we run a defined list of the questions your buyers ask, on a schedule, across the major engines, and record whether you are cited, alongside whom, and from which sources. That gives you a real trend line instead of a screenshot, and tells us which corroboration gaps to close next.
The difference is that we practice this in public. Our own site ships static server-rendered HTML, a connected schema.org @graph, a clean markdown twin of every page advertised to AI crawlers via rel=alternate, and llms.txt and llms-full.txt files. We also publish a [content-integrity hash](https://seoeliteagency.com/transparency/) for every page, so anyone can verify the content they are reading is the content we published and that it has not been altered. That is the honest version of "trust us", hash-verifiable content integrity, not a marketing badge.
The guardrails do not change for GEO. We work month-to-month, we start with a [free visibility audit](https://seoeliteagency.com/free-seo-audit/) across Google, the map pack and the AI engines, and we report on leads and revenue rather than citation vanity metrics. We are founder-led from Naples, and we would rather earn next month than lock you into a year.
